July 31, 2018: Equality Warriors – Time for Pessimism of the Intellect and Optimism of the Will
July 31, 2018 Robert Wood

It’s hard to keep your cool these days but we hope you are doing your best.  It’s during times like these when one must follow the advice of Italian writer and political theorist Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) who practiced “pessimism of the intellect and optimism of the will” in dealing with Mussolini and the incoming fascist regime.

In that tradition, we’re hard at work planning our “One & Done” campaign which will complete the ratification of Equal Rights Amendment and ensure equal rights for all Americans over the course of the next eight months.

PHASE ONE:

Launch the National Equality Pledge on Women’s Equality Day, August 26th 2018.

We will request that every single candidate and incumbent in all thirteen unratified states commit to voting “yes” on Equal Rights Legislation in their state, should they be elected, by signing our pledge no later than October 1st.

This gives us a month before November to educate constituents on where their candidates stand and to publicly thank pro-equality candidates.

Additionally, the pledge allows us to count votes on ERA well in advance of the next legislative session which begins in January of 2019; we can then target particular states and legislators with accuracy and precision.

This is an example of the pledge that will go to every single candidate in every unratified state.

To Raise Money:

Equal Means Equal and the Heroica Foundation are organizing a Summer Show to Benefit the Equal Rights Amendment at The Rita House in Los Angeles.

We will be inviting a private audience of fifty guests per night to experience a performance of Nobel Prize-winning Author Harold Pinter’s The Lover, a one-act play that deals with gender roles and the politics of personal relations starring EME’s Kamala Lopez & Joel Marshall.

Artistic Director of the Open Fist Theater, Martha Demson, a Yale Theatre graduate and colleague will direct.

All proceeds from the play will go to support Equal Means Equal’s programs and campaigns to ratify the ERA and are 100% tax deductible.

With love and thanks,

Kamala, Natalie, Joel, Jules, Lizzy, Sarabeth, Thila, Rebecca, Maeve and EME team.
