On Monday, more than a dozen additional groups representing veterans, Native Americans, Democrats, the philanthropic community, as well as businesses and women’s organizations joined the original 56 friends of the court in signing an amicus brief, filed by attorney Arlaine Rockey, supporting our federal lawsuit that demands the U.S. government add the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the non-partisan organization of more than 1,400 cities with populations of over 30,000, filed its own amicus brief in support of our lawsuit.
New signatories include Democrats Abroad, Global Indigenous Council, Hollywood NOW, Veterans for Peace (Albuquerque), Moms Fight Back and Fiduciary Trust International. Picture Social Justice, Culture Reframed, Driftwood Kitchen Design, Kuta Intellectual Property Law, LLC, Real Estate Advisors Group, Sustainable Marin, and Wisdom Lotus Foundation Inc. round out the list.
Equal Means Equal (EME) thanks the groups and the lawyers for the burgeoning support.
“We hear every day from new groups, businesses and people who want to be part of this historic fight for equality,” said Equal Means Equal President Kamala Lopez. “Many are what we call ‘equality warriors’ that know ERA’s time has come. Some, however, are Americans who have a growing concern about a heavy-handed administration that has shown a pattern of brutal and illegal social and economic oppression.”
Lopez attributed the big momentum the case is seeing to the initial filing of the amicus brief by Rockey, and a breathtakingly strong oral argument by EME’s legal counsel Wendy Murphy in favor of ERA made during the first court hearing of the case. “These attorneys, along with lawyers for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, have moved people to step up and demand equality for all. We are forever grateful for their contribution to the ERA movement and dogged pursuit of equal justice on all our behalf.”
“Blocking the ratification of ERA may be typical of this administration’s tyrannical culture but today’s American women are simply not going to accept it.” said Equal Means Equal President Kamala Lopez.
