Violence against women is a violation of their human rights. Worldwide, almost one third of women aged 15-49 have been subjected to some form of physical and/or sexual violence by their intimate partner. Often, police officers will not respond quickly to calls involving DV because they are the most dangerous calls they receive. In fact, you would be safer telling the police that you were being car jacked than beaten by your spouse – they would come sooner. Until women have the EQUAL PROTECTION OF OUR LAWS, abusers will continue to abuse us with little to no consequence. Please watch our film Equal Means Equal to learn more about how DV and equality intersect and hear the powerful stories of women who have had to fight back alone – only to find the law was NOT on their side. The Equal Rights Amendment brings accountability to gendered violence. It must be published immediately.

Wu Zetian, became the First Empress in 690 A.D. and only woman in more than 3,000 years of Chinese history to rule in her own right. She has had pretty bad press, painted as a usurper who was both physically cruel and erotically wanton. Explaining why the empress was so reviled means acknowledging the double standard that existed–and still exists–when it comes to assessing male and female rulers. But the reality is her reign was peaceful and prosperous and she promoted what might loosely be termed women’s rights, publishing Biographies of Famous Women and requiring children to mourn both parents, rather than merely their father. The fight for women’s equality has been going on for thousands of years – isn’t it time to plant the flag and say, “Enough is enough. This ends here – this ends THIS year; this ends with publication of the ERA”?
