A Call to Action Message from Our President

By Kamala Lopez

Season's Greetings, Friends and Fellow Equality Warriors.

It’s been an historic year for the women’s movement and the advancement of the Equal Rights Amendment in particular. We have tried to keep you abreast of our role in the ratification process and what we have been able to accomplish with your gracious support. If you missed anything you can always catch up at our News Page. It’s pretty cool to look back on what we’ve been able to do over the past few years!

Now, however, all of our focus at Equal Means Equal is on the immediate future of ERA ratification. The Virginia General Assembly convenes in three short weeks. We cannot simply take for granted the new leadership in Richmond will automatically proceed with ratification. We must keep the pressure on to ensure all the hard work in Virginia during the 2019 elections was not in vain.

We are asking our supporters come to the Virginia Capitol on Wednesday January 8th for opening day of the 2020 General Assembly and rally with us in Richmond.

A show of force and dedication in Virginia will send a strong message to lawmakers that they should act quickly to become the 38th state to ratify ERA.

The rally outside of the Capitol Building takes place January 8th from 10:30am -11:30am and then proceeds inside at noon, when the first day of session officially begins. We need you both outside and inside, flying your ERA colors, thanking them for their vote in advance while letting them know that women mean business and we will not be sidetracked, sidestepped or delayed again.

If you live in or near Virginia and need transportation, VARatifyERA will be coordinating buses to Richmond from Norfolk/Williamsburg, Northern Virginia/Fredericksburg, and Charlottesville. Tickets are either $15 or $30 depending on the distance.

If you can’t afford it, let us know and we will find a way to cover your seat (drop us a line and tell us your situation:  Right now we’ve got 2 buses filled but we need to fill many many more… Please help us do this. Call your friends. Organize your networks. Show up.

Beginning on January 9th at 10am, we will be reigniting the Silent Sentinel protest action we started outside the White House in 2017 and moved to Virginia. Thanks to VARatifyERA, the Deltas, NOVA Indivisible, local branches of the LWV, and other groups, the Silent Sentinels have kept vigil in Richmond for the past two years. Standing watch in view of the legislators every day is a powerful message: we will not leave until we achieve the full ratification of ERA.

We’ve got your sash ready – sign up here to stand vigil with us:

It is important to restate that the enemies of the ERA are also organizing. We anticipate opposition groups will also assemble in Richmond around the start of the session to try to obstruct or delay ratification of the ERA.

Make no mistake, we are up against a well-funded anti-ERA coalition that opposes everything from equal pay to insurance reform, from rape enforcement to sexual harassment claims to reproductive justice and LGBTQ+ rights – anything that would level the playing field for all American women.

For taking the time to show your support by joining us in Richmond, we have a handmade, fleece-lined Equal Means Equal hoodie that will keep you warm and carry a message that will let everyone know you are serious about the ERA. Our 500 limited-edition numbered hoodies will be available on a first come, first served basis, so please let us know as soon as you can if you will be joining us. You can email us at and please include Richmond Volunteer in the subject line and tell us your size and the dates you will be joining us in the body of the email.

EME’s HandMade Limited Edition Fleece-Lined Hoodies Demand Ratification of the 28th Amendment!
Make your voice be heard – wear your Legalize Equality Hoodie
outside the Capitol, the White House or your own town hall!

For those of you who cannot join us in Richmond, we still want you to have an Equal Means Equal hoodie, too. For every contribution of at least $500.000, we’ll send you a signed/numbered hoodie so you can show your support no matter where you are.

It truly is not easy for us to ask for your help, but we cannot finish the task of ratifying the ERA without your support. We appreciate everything you do to keep the fire burning, whether as a volunteer, a contributor who can make a tax-deductible contribution, or a friend who spreads the word. Thank you so much for the strength you all give us to persevere in our cause.

Happy Holidays and Blessings to You and Your Loved Ones,

Kamala Lopez
